Taxim's rooftop garden, "To Hayáti", is now open for service.
Chicago's limited and stunning summer needs to be enjoyed outdoors. What better way to do it but to dine on a rooftop enjoying Greek wines, spirits, and history-inspired drinks.
"To Hayati at Taxim, a magisterial perch above Milwaukee Avenue."
The chef …has brought a distilled liquor to patrons called raki, a drink introduction that coincides with the launch of a serene rooftop patio at Taxim… Modeled after rakadika — spots in Greece where people go to imbibe in the hard liquor and enjoy small, shareable plates… Served in a karafaki (carafe) offering four shots or in a single shot (sfinaki), raki, considered to be a potent cousin to absinthe, is usually sipped.
Diners “daydream” about the “authentic”, “carefully prepared” fare at this moderate Wicker Park Greek serving “inventive” small and large plates and a “lovely wine list”; the “beautiful” space “pays homage to the region” and has a rooftop patio, while “delightful” servers clinch its “must-try” status.
"David Schneider...devised his excellent restaurant Taxim in Wicker Park to 'show that there’s regionalism in Greece'. Try the fried cauliflower with whipped feta...the cloud of tzatziki with cucumbers and dill...the duck gyro with a pomegranate reduction...and a bottle of Greek red from a list deep with discoveries.”
36 Hours in Chicago
Chef-owner David Schneider raises the bar for serious, interesting regional Greek food at this Byzantine lounge that (dimly) exposes some of some of the freshest yet oldest ideas in village cuisine: humble, seasonal ingredients in simple, wonderful dishes like fresh-shelled favas with yogurt and lamb confit.
The selection of hot and cold mezzes and large plates is extensive, and apparently just hints at Schneider’s repertoire, said to include hundreds of recipes from Greece and Asia Minor. The all-Greek wine list is affordable and interesting.

This summer, look for sidewalk seating and a rooftop deck with views of Milwaukee Avenue in the front and the Blue Line's Damen El stop in the rear. Executive chef and owner David Schneider will offer a menu that includes both meze (small plates) and full-sized option that will change frequently to incorporate local and seasonal products whenever possible.
Opa! New Greek Eatery Hits Wicker Park
This Wicker Park rooftop quietly debuted…August [2015] . There’s room for 80 in the Greek dinner haven, with exposed brick, a small bar and a lush garden of herbs and tomatoes in terra cotta pots that dress up the exterior of the enclosed staircase that leads to the restaurant… We're picturing: Sharing a carafe of ouzo in the twilight with a sweetie.
Taxim Review (Updated): Still the Most Exotic Greek Restaurant in Town. Delicate dishes and no theatrics.
